(announcer) Lying on the warm sand at Crescent Beach. (SFX: beach sounds) Waves rolling in. Sun bright in the sky. Can you improve on that? Okay, how about this: giving your daughter one more push on the playground swing at Sebago State Park. (SFX: swing, child's laughter) Could it get any better? Try one more: (SFX: very faint ocean sound) Kicking back in the picnic area at Reid State Park… with a plateful of steamed clams. Can't beat that, right? (SFX down) Actually, we have. All these are better because of one important change: They're smoke-free, thanks to a new law that makes common areas in Maine state parks nonsmoking. This includes beaches, playgrounds, and snack bars. For a state that values clean air and unspoiled spaces, this is a milestone. Air without secondhand tobacco smoke is cleaner and safer to breathe. An environment with fewer cigarette butts has a reduced risk of fire and fewer of the toxins that harm wildlife and people. The great outdoors is now even greater. Enjoy. And breathe easy.
